Tips for a low-waste bathroom
For many of us, the bathroom is a special place after all. It is a place where me-time often takes center stage. From basic personal hygiene to extensive skin care to shower or bath thoughts. We spend a lot of time in the bathroom and often create a lot of waste in the process. Did you ever stop to think about that little bathroom trash can that is already full? That's why it's urgent time for tips for a waste-poor bathroom!
Look around your bathrooms. Look in the cabinets, next to the toilet, in the shower, on the bathtub rim, in the drawers, .... You'll probably see more (disposable) plastic than you think. Let's list some culprits.
Shower gel and shampoo in plastic bottles: People wash often, very often. And shower gel and shampoo in plastic bottles are still the common way the largest group of people purchase those products. In 2016, an estimated 480 billion bottles were sold worldwide. Converted, that's not a little less than a million bottles every minute.
Makeup wipes: Face and makeup wipes are often an essential part of many bathroom routines. If you use one or two cotton wipes daily to remove your makeup, you are throwing an average of 300 to 600 wipes into the trash every year. These are also often difficult to recycle because they are made up of different fibers.
Disposable razors: Razor blades have become almost permanent furniture in many bathrooms. And unfortunately, the vast majority of those razor blades are made of plastic. The typical refillable razor blades have tons of plastic packaging and eventually have to be thrown away. The EPA (environmental protection agency) estimates that about 2 billion razor blades are thrown away each year (in the U.S. alone!).
Disposable menstrual products: Menstrual products are a necessity, but the most commonly chosen menstrual products create a lot of waste. Most products are single-use and are made of plastic or other non-recyclable materials. An estimated 5000 to 15000 tampons and pads are used over a person's lifetime, and that can add up quite a bit!
Although a bathroom can produce a lot of waste, it doesn't have to! With these changes, you can eliminate waste from your bathroom and even save space and money. With these "swaps," you and your bathroom will go through life trash-free.
Shampoo bars or refillable bottles: Whereas a classic block of soap has been around since grandmother's time, the shampoo or body bar is a new phenomenon. Anyone concerned with reducing plastic can't ignore it. It is often packed in cardboard and depending on the size, would also save up to 3 bottles!
Washable makeup wipes: Cotton or bamboo makeup wipes are the perfect substitute. They are washable, easy to store and can be reused over and over again. You can combine them with your favorite cleanser or makeup remover for a fresh face without plastic waste!
Reusable razor: A good long-term investment is a reusable razor. There are plenty of options and are available almost everywhere already. A Saferty Razor, for example, not only looks nice in your bathroom but also saves a lot of waste. All you have to do is replace the individual blades and keep the handle forever!
Reusable menstrual products: The range of more durable menstrual products has expanded tremendously in recent years. From a menstrual cup to menstrual underwear and reusable pads. So you're sure to find a product that fits your needs. They all have one thing in common; they are not made for single use. Furthermore, these variants are often much cheaper than their less durable counterparts. Definitely worth it!
