With the expectation and birth of their (first) child, many parents are more aware of the impact of their consumption habits on society and the environment. But vhe arrival of your baby also requires a lot of stuff. How do you do that in the most environmentally friendly way possible? With these tips you can create a sustainable baby outfit.

What does a sustainable baby kit look like?

It's a turn-off that takes both people and nature into account. Choose things that can last longer, create less waste, are easy to recycle, use less electricity, .... Choosing sustainable products and materials often benefit your wallet in the long run as well.

Waste-friendly tips for new babies

Like planning for pregnancy, planning for low-waste parenthood is an important step. Plastic won't be completely avoidable, but you can avoid or reduce most disposable items for babies and toddlers by planning ahead. Here are some tips:

1. Establish a well-thought-out birth list.

List here only what you really need. Then try to stick to this list. Do you doubt whether something is useful? Don't buy it yet, you can always do that later. This way you avoid buying too much or not using products. You can also ask family and friends which products they didn't really need from their baby purchases. Furthermore, you can often buy high quality material second hand or borrow it for a few weeks/months.

2. Use washable diapers as much as possible

Babies and toddlers use a lot of diapers. A lot! It is therefore interesting not to always use disposable diapers. Washable diapers are reusable and thus drastically reduce a baby's waste. This switch also has a positive impact on your wallet. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to change diapers and keep track of the dirty diaper throughout the day. Therefore, it is always handy to have a few disposable diapers on hand to avoid experiencing awkward moments.

3. Glass or steel baby bottles

Baby bottles are essential no matter how you will raise your baby. Common baby bottles are made of plastic, and now they are all required to be made of BPA-free plastic. However, if you don't want to choose a plastic bottle, there are other options. Such as a glass or steel variety.

4. Durable baby clothes and blankets

It seems like you have to buy new clothes for a baby every 2 weeks. So it is also quite difficult to always find responsible clothing. If you are thinking of having another baby, here is the best tip to save and reuse everything well. If not, you can always borrow as well. Furthermore, the textile industry is so polluting that when you do buy things, it is best to look for more sustainable fabrics such as organic cotton.

Whether it's your first child, you're just starting to consume consciously or both are the case, raising children and doing so in a low-waste way seems like quite a difficult challenge. But a little planning and research will get you a long way.
